FISHER REVERSES STANCE ON KEY

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 17, 2007) -- The Tennessee Titans need an experienced receiver to help Vince Young, and said they are interested in veteran Keyshawn Johnson.

"There's mutual interest I'd say right now," coach Jeff Fisher said. "I think we'll probably look into the possibility of pursuing things. Where that goes, I can't tell you."

PORTIS HAS SORE KNEE

Gary Fitzgerald, of Redskins.com, reports Washington Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs said RB Clinton Portis (shoulder, knee) has developed tendonitis in his knee. "He has had some soreness in his knee, but he said he could run and work out on it. He's on his weight [training] program. We'll see how the running goes. We'll see how quickly we can get him back," Gibb said. Portis has been rehabbing a shoulder injury.

DALLAS SIGNS BERLIN

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports the St. Louis Rams have signed unrestricted free-agent QB Brock Berlin (Cowboys). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

LIONS LIKE THEIR CHANCES

“Wow, what a dream come true.”

That was the reaction from Detroit Lions offensive coordinator MIKE MARTZ when the team selected Georgia Tech wide
receiver CALVIN JOHNSON with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

The Lions’ fans at Ford Field on draft day felt the same way as they let out a loud roar of approval when NFL
Commissioner ROGER GOODELL announced the team’s pick in New York.

“We couldn’t be more excited to get Calvin Johnson,” says Lions President and CEO MATT MILLEN. “Our organization
felt really comfortable to draft not only what we thought was the top player in the draft, but also one with great character.
Calvin is going to be a big part of getting us to where we want to go.”

The addition of Johnson to Martz’s offensive system, dubbed “The Greatest Show on Turf” when he coached in St. Louis,
has Lions fans excited and defensive coordinators worried.

“Calvin is going to team with Mike and the rest of this offense and turn it into one of the most dynamic offenses in the
league,” says Millen.

In the week leading up to the draft, Martz left hand-written notes saying “Please draft me” for Detroit head coach ROD
MARINELLI and joked they were from Johnson.

“That’s how excited we were about him,” says Martz. “He’s just a dynamic and explosive player with unlimited ability in
terms of what he can do for us on the field. He has the character we’re looking for and he will help this team win. I think
he’s the best wide receiver in the draft that I’ve ever seen.”

Martz, who spent seven seasons with the St. Louis Rams as offensive coordinator (1999) and head coach (2000-05)
before joining the Lions last year, has high expectations for his receiving corps as Johnson and newly acquired SHAUN
MC DONALD (UFA, St. Louis) join Pro Bowl wide receiver ROY WILLIAMS (NFC-best 1,310 yards in 2006) and MIKE
FURREY (NFC-high 98 receptions).

“That’s a pretty good crew of four,” says Martz, who coached perennial All-Stars ISAAC BRUCE, MARSHALL FAULK
and TORRY HOLT in St. Louis as the Rams became the first team to score at least 500 points in three consecutive
seasons. “It could equal the best I’ve ever had, or maybe it will be a bit better.”

Williams and Furrey are also among those excited about the addition of the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive
Player of the Year to the receiving corps.

“We should tear defenses up,” says Williams, who himself was a first-round draft pick by the Lions in 2004.

“I think that Calvin is the final piece of this offense to open things up,” adds Furrey. “It’s going to be wild. It’ll be fun.”

The man in charge of getting the ball into the receivers’ hands, quarterback JON KITNA, couldn’t have been happier with
the selection of Johnson.

“Any time you can add the best player in the draft is a good thing for your football team,” says Kitna, who passed for a
career-high 4,208 yards in his first season working with Martz. “This shows we’re not playing around. We’re trying to win
this season.”

With renewed optimism, Lions fans can’t wait for Kickoff Weekend. And they’re not the only ones counting down the
days.

“I’ve never been so excited for a season to start,” says Martz.

AIR CUTLER

Mike Klis, of the Denver Post, reports the Denver Broncos want use the strong arm of QB Jay Cutler to throw more on third down. Last season, with QB Jake Plummer starting, the Broncos ran the ball on third down, needing three or more yards, more than a quarter of the time. When Cutler was starting, the team only ran it 12 percent of the time.

ADAMS TO MEET WITH DEN

Tom Kensler, of the Denver Post, reports the Denver Broncos may meet with unrestricted free-agent DT Sam Adams (Bengals), but would like to gather more information before making the decision.

'FINS TO INCREASE OFFER FOR GREEN

Alex Marvez, of the Sun-Sentinel, reports the Miami Dolphins may be willing to increase their offer to acquire Kansas City Chiefs QB Trent Green, according to NFL.com. The Dolphins had offered a sixth-round choice in the 2007 NFL Draft.

J-RUSS CONTINUES TO IMPRESS

The charting of the NFL's first pick, quarterback JaMarcus Russell, continued Wednesday at the opening of the Raiders' four-week Organized Team Activity practices.

Team observers said the 6-foot-5, 265-pounder looked trimmer since the team's mandatory minicamp last month and coach Lane Kiffin said Russell has been studying his playbook.

"In the huddle, he was better," Kiffin said. "He was better at the line of scrimmage as the plays just rolled off his tongue."
Russell threw deep and rolled out often during practice. His only glaring blemish was an interception he threw to safety Darnell Bing in team drills.

"It's a lot they are throwing at you, but I think I'm doing pretty good with that," Russell said.

With 31/2 more weeks of the practices and a full training camp, Russell has a long way to go and it's unclear who will be the starter when the Raiders open Sept. 9 against Detroit in Oakland.

"I'm a team player," Russell said when asked about the possibility of being an understudy. "I'm one of the biggest cheerleaders they have right now. I'm the type of player, I would love to be out there. Whatever it is to help my teammates, I'm here to do that."

So far, Kiffin continues to be impressed with Russell's arm strength.

"He throws the ball different than the other guys out here and he throws the ball different than most people in the world," Kiffin said.

Shuffling line: Kiffin said it's an open competition at quarterback with the top contenders being Russell, incumbent Andrew Walter and Josh McCown, whom the Raiders acquired in a draft-day deal from Detroit. And, according to Kiffin, the offensive line remains unsettled.

KEYSHAWN TO TEN: "NEWS TO FISHER"

Could a visit to the Tennessee Titans be in Keyshawn Johnson’s future?

Johnson’s agent, Jerome Stanley, would neither confirm nor deny that his client was scheduled to visit the Titans in the near future. But there are indications that a visit to Tennessee could be forthcoming.

Stanley declined comment when asked about any contract negotiations between the Titans and him regarding Johnson.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher when asked if Johnson had a visit scheduled said, “That’s news to me. I have not talked to Keyshawn in a few weeks.”

MCDONALD TO RETURN PUNTS

Whoever ends up with the Detroit Lions return jobs on punts and kicks will also likely gvet a bonus gig -- the #5 wide receiver position. Whoever gets the duties will likely have to be adept at both jobs. So far in minicamp the competition looks to be between WRs Eddie Drummond and Shaun McDonald. McDonald is almost a lock for the punt return job, but the KR slot has been a revolving door so far in camp. In addition to Drummond, several other players -- including WRs Deavle Ellis, Kevin Kasper, Cliff Russell, Edell Shepard and DB Dee McCann -- have taken turns there.

WONG CALLS IT QUITS

Houston Texans linebacker Kailee Wong, a nine year veteran of the NFL, has decided to call it a career. While his retirement from the NFL is not yet official, the Texans have left the door open for his return in 2007. Wong is leaving the Texans as their career sacks leader, with 15. HC Gary Kubiak revealed Wong?s status when the veteran was absent from workouts Wednesday morning.

BROWN STAYING PUT

Defensive end Alex Brown is unhappy about his loss of playing time to Mark Anderson, but the two-time Pro Bowl alternate is not agitating to get out of town. He said Wednesday he and his agent asked the Bears for permission to look for a trade, though the team is in no hurry to let him leave.

"[The Bears] don't want to get rid of me," Brown, 27, said in a satellite radio interview. "I just want to see what else is out there."

The Bears have indicated they will listen if another team makes a must-take offer for Brown, but they believe Brown is a solid player at a key position in their system. Were it not for the surprise emergence of rookie rush specialist Anderson in 2006, Brown would not be looking.

"I really, really enjoy where I'm at," Brown said. "I love the city of Chicago. I love the team. It's just that opportunities come up, and if I'm able to get an opportunity somewhere else, that would be fine. If I'm playing here next year, I'll give it everything I have, just like I always do."

VICK VIDEO DOESN'T EXIST

The Virginia Animal Fighting Task Force, which is investigating dogfighting at a property that was owned by Michael Vick, does not have a videotape of the Falcons quarterback at a dogfight.

Kathy Strouse, the lead investigator, said informants indicated that a tape exists of Vick at a dogfight.

"Let's be very accurate here, because some of the reports out there are not accurate," Strouse told the Journal-Constitution on Tuesday. "We have information from informants that a tape exists of a dogfight and that Michael Vick is present. Whether that tape exists, we do not know that it exists."

KITNA IMPRESSED WITH JOHNSON

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) -- Jon Kitna got his first look at Calvin Johnson on Tuesday.

He was very happy with what he saw.

The Detroit Lions quarterback got to work with the draft's No. 2 pick at the first practice of a three-day minicamp.

"He's certainly going to be used to the best of his ability this year," Kitna said. "He's going to give us a lot of options."

Kitna acknowledged he couldn't get too excited after one non-contact workout, but he was impressed.

"He didn't break the huddle with the baffled look that most first-year guys have when they are trying to learn ... (offensive coordinator Mike) Martz's offense," he said. "Heck, there are guys who have been working on it for a year that still don't always know what to do, but Calvin knew where he was supposed to be. He's obviously been doing his homework."

DRAFT CLOCK TO BE SHORTENED

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to broach the subject of reducing the time limits for making selections in the first two rounds of the draft at the owners annual spring meeting in Nashville early next week. That comes after this year’s opening round lasted a record six hours and eight minutes. Currently, teams are allowed 15 minutes to make their opening round selection, 10 minutes in the second, and five minutes for the final five rounds. Len Pasquarelli of ESPN is reporting that the competition committee is expected to recommend time limits of 10 minutes for the first round, seven minutes for the second, and five minutes for the remaining rounds. The time changes could come as the NFL considers moving the draft’s opening round into prime time on Friday night. While teams are known to be reluctant to cut the opening round time limit, there is speculation that there is support for the measure around the league.

BROWN REQUESTS TRADE

The Associated Press reports Chicago Bears DE Alex Brown told Sirius NFL Radio that he asked the team for permission to work out a trade. Head coach Lovie Smith is still planning to have Brown at this weekend's minicamp. Brown admitted he is comfortable with the team, but he would like to explore other opportunities. "We're just trying to see what's out there. That's what we're trying to do. It's not the Bears. They don't want to get rid of me. It's just that I want to see what else is out there. If it was up to me I'd get a new contract here and play the rest of my career here. I totally understand some of the things the Bears are saying. We're handling this in a real low-key fashion and that's the way we want to keep it," Brown said.

GREEN COULD BE ON THE MOVE SOON

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports the Kansas City Chiefs could trade QB Trent Green before their organized team activities start May 21. Green is adamant he will attend, but the Chiefs do not want him to show up. The Tennessee Titans were in a similar situation in 2006 with former QB Steve McNair, and they ended up locking McNair out of the team's facilities, which later led to a trade with the Baltimore Ravens. The Chiefs would like to avoid doing the same to Green. The Miami Dolphins are also willing to budge off of their offer of a sixth-round pick for Green, which could help get a trade completed faster.

PETERSON WON'T NEED SURGERY

Sean Jensen, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, reports the collarbone injury of Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian L. Peterson (collarbone) is healing, and he will not need surgery to add a plate to stabilize the collarbone at this time. Peterson has been participating at the team's minicamp and will not be limited at training camp.

FAVRE MAY BE IN CAMP

Updating a previous report, Pete Dougherty, of the Green Bay Press Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre said he would not attend the team's minicamp because he cannot participate in any drills. Also, Favre would like to work out as well as attend his daughter's graduation in Mississippi, according to the Biloxi Sun Herald. However, it appears head coach Mike McCarthy and Favre will talk about the situation and make a decision after the meeting. Currently, Favre is not excused from the minicamp.

UNDRAFTED FA UPDATE PART II

Kansas City has signed four undrafted rookie free agents including former Louisville LB David Harris, one of the highest rated undrafted rookie agents. The Chiefs also signed former CB Tony Franklin, FB Gilbert Harris and LB David Hicks. Meanwhile, the New York Jets released undrafted rookie free agent offensive lineman Nick Smith and signed former New Mexico C/G Robert Turner.

UNDRAFTED FA UPDATE PART I

NFL teams continue to tinker with their pre-camp rosters. The Giants, for example, released undrafted rookie free agent WR Brandon Myles, who was considered to be the team’s top-rated undrafted rookie free agent. On other side of Giants Stadium the Jets released four undrafted rookie free agents including CB Caleb Hendrix, DE Matt King, LB Mark Zalewski and WR Dustin Osborn. Again, all four were relatively highly rated prior to the draft. Meanwhile, Washington released WR Deyon Williams, another reasonably well-regarded undrafted rookie free agent receiver, among several roster moves yesterday. At the same time, each of the three teams added several rookie free agents, although none is particularly well known, at least in a football sense. One of the players signed by the Jets was former Virginia Commonwealth basketball player Jesse Pellot-Rosa who will try out as a WR.

CIN MINI-CAMP UPDATE

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals DL Domata Peko worked with the first unit at defensive tackle during the team's offseason practice Tuesday, May 15. Peko is expected to replace DL Sam Adams this season. Adams was released by the team Monday, May 14.

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis is not happy with CB Deltha O'Neal not taking part in the team's voluntary offseason workouts. "We all watch the same tape in the NFL," Lewis said. "This is the opportunity to right your ship and this is the first chance football-wise to begin that process, particularly for a defensive back. He's missing on some work that he shouldn't miss on. He's put himself behind as time goes on."

BEARS SIGN ANOTHER PICK

Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Chicago Bears have signed FS Kevin Payne to a four-year contract worth $1.815 million. The deal includes a $150,000 signing bonus and base salaries of $285,000 in 2007, $370,000 in 2008, $460,000 in 2009 and $550,000 in the 2010 season.

ELLIS UPDATE

Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys LB Greg Ellis is unhappy with his contract situation and how the team has not given him an extension. "A contract extension says you are our guy and we want you here. It sets it straight with that guy. It sets it straight with the media. It sets it straight with everybody. I haven't talked to Jerry about it, and I am not going to. But it's understood, and Jerry knows it. I think Jerry should do something." Ellis said. Ellis said he will not create any problems for the team and is not demanding anything and would not be surprised if he is released sometime during training camp or during the season.

PERRY TO TAKE HENRY'S JOB?

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cincinnati Bengals WR Tab Perry has received the first long look as the team's No. 3 wide receiver during offseason workouts, in place of suspended WR Chris Henry.

CROUCH ON THE CFL COMEBACK TRAIL

QB Eric Crouch continued his CFL post-graduate work this off-season. Soon after Steve Buratto was named the Argos offensive coordinater, Crouch got his hand on Calgary Stampeders game tape from 2006 to study his new coach. After learning the formations and the style of offence Buratto ran in Calgary, Crouch became even more enthused at the prospect of reviving his career. "The reason I am here is to play and be the starter. I set high expectations for myself and I think they are realistic."

VANDERJAGT WITHOUT A TEAM

Very quietly, veteran kicker Mike Vanderjagt worked out for the Giants last month. But the Giants opted to sign Marc Hickok, who previously kicked in arenafootball2, the minor league for the Arena Football League. Vanderjagt's agent, Gil Scott, said his client's workout for the Giants went well; Vanderjagt connected on 11 of 13 field-goal attempts. It was just that the Giants opted to go with the younger -- and much less known -- Hickok. Now Vanderjagt, the most accurate kicker in NFL history, is a man without a team. This offseason, he has worked out for the Saints and Giants, but hasn't received any offers -- a baffling development.

NYG KICKER UPDATE

With the departure of PK Jay Feely to Miami, the Giants are watching closely the competition between kickers Josh Huston and Marc Hickok. Huston was signed last last season as an insurance policy to Feely, but recently had an appendectomy and will sit out until mid-June. Hickok beat out the likes of FA Mike Vanderjagt and Paul Edinger in an April tryout. His only experience is with the arenafootball2 league.

CLEVELAND QB UPDATE

Cleveland Browns HC Romeo Crennel met with the media following practice today, Crennel has a keen eye on the starting QB competition between Incumbents Derek Anderson and Charlie Frye, and rookie Brady Quinn. "Charlie has a leg up. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, but I'll also give Brady and (Derek) Anderson the opportunity to show what they can do. It puts pressure on the coaches to make a decision as quickly as possible, because the guy you choose needs to get to work. The longer we let it drag out, the more the danger of spreading the reps too thin," Crennel said.

TO: "LEARNED NOTHING" LAST SEASON

When asked about what he had got out of a year under HC Bill Parcells, Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens replied "Nothing, really." He went on to say that Parcells' disciplinarian style wasn't necessary and having a new HC, Wade Phillips, was good for everybody.

GUTIERREZ CONTRACT DETAILS

Mike Reiss, of the Boston Globe, reports the New England Patriots have signed undrafted free-agent QB Matt Gutierrez (Idaho State) to a two-year deal. Gutierrez received a $10,000 signing bonus, but the other financial terms were not disclosed.

K.JONES RUNNING

Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, reports Detroit Lions RB Kevin Jones (foot) did not take part in any team activities Tuesday, May 15, but he was able to run along the sideline. He has had the final two screws removed from his foot.

FAVRE TO FACE FINE?

MILWAUKEE -- Although Brett Favre plans to skip the Green Bay Packers' mandatory minicamp this weekend, he might not be excused by Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy was not available for comment Tuesday, but team spokesman Jeff Blumb said that as far as McCarthy was concerned, "the camp is mandatory."

The Packers' three-day minicamp begins Friday, and Favre could face fines from the team if he fails to show up without being formally excused.

BEARS INK PICK

John Mullin, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears RB Garrett Wolfe signed a four-year contract worth approximately $2.3 million. The deal includes a $623,000 signing bonus.

FIGURS TO REPLACE SAMS?

Baltimore Ravens return specialist B.J. Sams was acquitted of driving under the influence and negligent driving charges in district court Tuesday.

Sams, who was arrested Oct. 3, was found guilty of a lane violation, which carries a $90 fine and one point on his driving record.

He had probation before judgment on his record for a prior DUI charge.

Judge Nancy Purpura said the state's case was affected by a lack of evidence, because Sams wasn't offered a Breathalyzer exam and field sobriety tests weren't captured completely on the arresting state trooper's video.

"I'm not persuaded by a reasonable doubt that he drove while impaired," Purpura said. "The burden of proof never moves from the state to the defense."

"He has been exonerated, and he's excited about that," said Sams' lawyer, Mark Alperstein. "I think there's a tendency with professional athletes to assume because they're charged and because they've been involved with something in the past or because of their lifestyle that they're automatically guilty. We should all be cautious about that."

HOLCOMB SURPRISED BY KOLB PICK

Paul Domowitch, of Philly.com, reports Philadelphia Eagles QB Kelly Holcomb was surprised when the Eagles drafted QB Kevin Kolb with their first pick. "I don't know about the effect on Donovan, but I do know the effect on me. I didn't expect it. But, hey, that's the business. That's the game of football. You've got to compete. I've had to compete for everything I've gotten in this league. It's just another day for me," Holcomb said.

TAYLOR JOINS 'MATES

Sean Taylor has joined the Redskins for the second week of OTAs.
Taylor was at Redskins Park on Tuesday morning working out with teammates and attending meetings. He participated in the team's afternoon practice session.

OTA attendance is not mandatory for players. In years past, however, Redskins coaches have encouraged players to attend.

Taylor did not participate in the first week of OTAs, which began on May 8.

'SKINS INK WESTBROOK

NFL.com reports the Washington Redskins have signed undrafted free-agent DB Byron Westbrook (Salisbury)Tuesday, May 15.

JAX TO AIR IT OUT

Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars' new offensive scheme under offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter will attempt more passes downfield, in addition to using the tight end more, according to head coach Jack Del Rio. The offense is also expected to feature more four-receiver sets.

THURMAN IN THE MIX

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals LB Odell Thurman will have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot in training camp if reinstated by the National Football League next month, according to head coach Marvin Lewis. Thurman, who was suspended a year for repeated violations of the league's substance abuse policy, is eligible to return to the team July 11.

SAM THE MAN

Miami Dolphins-allocated wide receiver P.K. Sam has been named NFL Europa Offensive Player of Week 5 following his efforts in leading the Rhein Fire to a key victory over the league-leading Frankfurt Galaxy last weekend.

Sam led the Fire attack by catching six passes for 122 yards with a long of 46 yards. He scored on an eight-yard reception from former NFL starting quarterback Cody Pickett.

At the halfway stage of the 2007 season, Sam has 15 receptions for 274 yards and one touchdown. His average of 18.3 yards per catch is the highest among the league’s top 10 receivers.

BRADSHAW IMPRESSES

Ralph Vacchiano, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw has impressed the Giants' coaching staff with his quickness, hands and ability to cut back during runs.

HAIRSTON UPDATE

The Patriots must like Central Connecticut State product Justise Hairston, because running backs coach Ivan Fears unleashed the mother of all tirades on him Sunday afternoon. It was difficult to tell from the sidelines what error Hairston made, but Fears’ (unprintable) words were unmistakable. The guess here is Pats coaches aren’t wasting their breath on players they don’t think have a chance of making the team. So in a strange way, the sixth-rounder should consider himself flattered.

MCFADDEN ON COWBOYS RADAR?

Todd Archer, of the Dallas Morning News, reports the Dallas Cowboys may go after University of Arkansas RB Darren McFadden in the 2008 NFL Draft, if he declares for the draft. The Cowboys have two first-round picks next year.

FINNERAN DONE!

According to ESPN.com.com, ATL WR Brian Finneran has reportedly torn his ACL in the same knee that kept him out all of 2006.

BUCHANAN BACKTRACKS

Former Falcons player Ray Buchanan denied comments attributed to him during a radio talk show about having direct knowledge of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick being involved in illegal dogfighting.

"I don't know anything about Mike being involved in dogfighting, and that's for real, coming from the Mouth of the South," Buchanan told the Journal-Constitution Monday. "For me to say something like that is wrong because I'd never throw another player under the bus. I don't know and I didn't say anything about Mike Vick, who I know, who I live by, having anything to do with dogfighting.

"All I know is what everybody else knows, and that's the stuff I see on the news or read about."

FAVRE TO MISS NEXT MINI-CAMP

Brett Favre will not attend the Green Bay Packers' mandatory minicamp this weekend because of his daughter's upcoming graduation, he told a reporter in Mississippi on Monday.

HAYIM: WHAT'S THE FUSS?

Gregg Hayim, NFL Draft Bible

So Brett Favre spoke out about his unhappiness in regards to the Packers front office inability to land Randy Moss? Big friggin’ deal!

For the better part of the afternoon I have listened to the talking heads of the sports world rip into Brett Favre with wild abandon; calling him selfish, arrogant, inconsiderate and egotistical. And why? Because he gave an honest interview stating his displeasure with the team he has come to define, unwillingness to outbid a Patriot team that landed one of the game’s best wide-receivers for a fourth round pick? Forgive me for not joining the media masses on this one, I won’t do it for one simple reason; they are 100 percent wrong.

We have to look at this from Brett Favre’s Perspective. The Packers gradually improved last season and ended on a high note, winning their last four games to finish 8-8. And for once in his over-dramatic career he didn’t leave the team waiting. He made his off-season retirement decision swiftly as he is seemingly convinced the team can be a contender. With Moss open to the possibility of coming to Green Bay, Favre envisioned what life would be like with a receiving trio of Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, and Randy Moss- it sure seemed nice didn’t it Brett? Favre let his feelings be known that these were his wishes- and I apologize to all the cheese-head’s out there, but Brett Favre has earned the right to have his wishes granted- just ask John Madden; if he had the time to remove his head from Brett’s rear he would reiterate this point, I assure you.

It was like all Brett wanted for his eighty-third birthday was that shiny bright-red Bicycle. He begged and he pleaded for that Schwinn. He was convinced that his parents would come through for him. After all, he has always been the favorite child. But when draft day came around and he tore open the wrapping paper, there was no bicycle; only a pair of sweat socks. And to make matters worse, Toys R Us called the next day to let him know the bicycle was on sale!

So the guy complained, like I said, big Friggin’ Deal!

CIN SIGNS ALLEN

- The Cincinnati Bengals signed defensive tackle Kenderick Allen to a one-year deal on Monday.

Allen was limited to two games for the Green Bay Packers last season after being placed on the Reserve/Injured list with a foot injury.

Allen has played in 31 career games and amassed 52 tackles, three sacks and two fumble recoveries in stints with the Packers and New York Giants.

SAM ADAMS RELEASED

Just 13 months after signing three-time Pro Bowler Sam Adams to anchor their run defense, the Bengals terminated his contract Monday to make way for younger defensive tackles.

The move comes the same day they announced signing Kenderick Allen, a fifth-year player with the Packers in 2006, two weeks after they drafted Oregon’s Matt Toeaina in the sixth round, and three weeks after they signed Denver’s Michael Myers in free agency. The move also basically assures second-year man Domata Peko starts next to John Thornton in the middle of the Bengals 4-3.

Adams had no comment.

HESTER SWITCHING TO OFFENSE

Coach Lovie Smith revealed Monday that All-Pro return specialist Devin Hester will switch from defense to offense beginning with this weekend’s full-squad minicamp.

“I think Devin Hester is one of the most exciting players in the NFL with his hands on the football,” Smith said. “I think he would be an excellent defensive back also. We just feel that this is in the best interest of us and him for him to achieve his full potential as a football player.”

Hester will work with the wide receivers at minicamp, but he’s also expected to line up in the backfield at times and could be utilized like the New Orleans Saints’ Reggie Bush.

“Right now we’re not going to put any limits on it,” Smith said. “We have a new piece to the puzzle. We’re anxious to see what we can do with him and the role that he’ll develop into.

“There are a lot of different ways we can go. You can make a case for him being a slot receiver. You can make a case for him being a single receiver when we go to our two-tight end, two-running back packages. You can make a case for him from the running back position.

“He’s an offensive weapon right now. That’s the only limit we put on him.”

MCNABB INJURY UPDATE

During his press conference Monday, May 14, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid discussed QB Donovan McNabb's (knee) rehabilitation schedule. "He's been throwing once a week, and he looks good in that area. Progressively, he'll be given more days where he can get out and throw, and he'll continue his rehab. The closer we get to camp, he'll be back to full speed. So, we're expecting him, when camp starts, to be able to participate."

MERIWEATHER DISPLAYS VERSATILITY

Mike Reiss and Christopher L. Gasper, of the Boston Globe, report New England Patriots FS Brandon Meriweather worked at both safety and cornerback during the team's rookie minicamp.

EDWARDS THINKING PLAYOFFS

Tony Grossi, of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, reports Cleveland Browns WR Braylon Edwards feels the team has the possibility to win 10 games this season and make the postseason. "I believe that 10-6 for us this year is a success. Making the playoffs this year is a possibility, as well as winning our conference. So this should be a great year for the Browns," Edwards said during a radio interview. "We have an offensive system now that can work for us. We have players on offense that can work for us. Our defense played well most of the year, but the offense was giving them no help. So now we're in a situation where 8-8, to me, is not a success this year."

FAVRE ISSUES STATEMENT

Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre released the following statement Monday, May 14, stating his desire to remain with the team. "I was frustrated a couple weeks back when Randy Moss was traded to New England. I never wanted to be traded and I don't want to be traded. I want to be in Green Bay. I want to finish my career as a Packer. Sometimes when I get frustrated I let my emotions get the better of me. As I said in February when I announced that I was coming back, I am excited about the young talent on our team and the improvements we're going to see from one year to the next. I really enjoy the young guys I'm playing with. I'm working hard down in Mississippi right now, rehabbing, and I plan to be in the best shape of my life. I look forward to playing with this team and seeing what we can do. I think we can be pretty good."

LAURENCE MARONEY INJURY UPDATE

Ms. Guregian reports that while attending Kevin Faulk's celebrity softball tournament, Maroney was being careful with both shoulders, signing autographs left-handed while underhanding the softball right-handed. Of course, it's not prudent to read too much into it. Under the Patriots' cloak of medical secrecy you never know what he's been prescribed by doctors or head coach Bill Belichick.

Maroney was at the game and was smiling and playful but did not participate in the action. He was the umpire.
Several times when balls got past the catcher, he'd pick it up, and roll it back to the pitcher on the ground, or simply hand it to the catcher to throw back. One inning, when he was left to warm up the pitcher, he tossed the ball back underhand.

KEYSHAWN NARROWS IT DOWN TO 5

According to Mark Eckel of the Trenton (NJ) Times, free agent wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson will choose among the following teams-Tennessee, San Francisco, the Giants, the Jets, and Green Bay. Johnson was recently released by the Carolina Panthers.

BRIAN LEONARD UPDATE

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams head coach Scott Linehan envisions RB/FB Brian Leonard fulfilling multiple roles with the team. Linehan would like to see Leonard earn a few snaps at fullback, running back and as a third-down back each week, plus a play or two in short yardage. "Before it's all said and done, he's in the game for 15-20 snaps," Linehan said of Leonard. "What we're trying to do is ... give Steven [RB Steven Jackson] a little bit of a break without changing the emphasis of using him. I have a hard time pulling Steven out of the game — ever — personally. But there's got to be times where we manage that."

KEITH JACKSON JR. UPDATE

Keith Jackson Sr. was an All-America tight end at the University of Oklahoma and is in the College Football Hall of Fame. A first-round draft pick by Philadelphia in 1988, he caught 441 passes, made six Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl (with Green Bay) during a nine-year NFL career. All of which is a tough act to follow for Keith Jackson Jr., a Rams rookie defensive tackle. "It has been tough at times," said Jackson, a seventh-round pick from Arkansas. "But I always played defense, so I had my own footsteps I had to make because I played a totally different position." Besides, having a father who was an NFL star did have its perks. Like those family "vacations" to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii. And that trip to the Super Bowl. "That was the really, really big deal that inspired me in life — going to the Super Bowl," Jackson said.

RAVENS DRAFT DATA

In Ozzie Newsome's first 10 drafts with the Ravens, his first-round selections have made a total of 28 Pro Bowl appearances, which is particularly impressive when you consider Baltimore often picks in the bottom half of the first round due to its success. Since 1999 -- when Newsome put the final pieces together to win Super Bowl XXXV and cap the 2000 season -- 74.2 percent of the players he selected in the draft are on an NFL roster (46 of 62) and more than half of those are still with the Ravens. Baltimore is also one of six teams (the others are Chicago, Indianapolis, New England, Oakland and Washington) that do not belong to the two major scouting services used by the rest of the NFL clubs. Newsome, instead, uses that money for an extra scout on the payroll and relies on his evaluators within the organization.

ROBERT MEACHEM UPDATE

Saints receiver Robert Meachem was down on himself Sunday after having the worst kind of welcome-to-the-NFL experience during rookie minicamp. The Saints' first-round draft pick admittedly arrived out of shape after falling behind in offseason workouts this spring. He then tweaked his left ankle Sunday morning and had to head to the training room. "It's not disappointing. It's frustrating, because you know what you can do, and it's kind of hard to show the coaches what you can do when you can't give it your all," said Meachem, who said he did well in spurts Saturday but fatigue led to inconsistency. Meachem said part of the reason he fell behind this spring was that he had nine pre-draft visits with NFL teams, each of which seemed to include a fancy meal or two.

BUCHANAN A SNITCH?

Flowery Branch — Another report has surfaced that claims Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was involved in illegal dog fighting.

Fox Sports Radio's Chris Landry told a Tampa Bay radio station on Friday that he was told by former Falcons player Ray Buchanan that Vick is directly involved in dog fighting.

Former teammate Ray Buchanan says Michael Vick 'not only knew about [alleged dog fighting], he is behind all of it.'

Attempts by the Journal-Constitution to reach Buchanan through a representative were unsuccessful. Landry could not be reached for comment.

Landry told the radio station that Buchanan told him at last month's NFL draft that Vick was definitely involved. "He tells me that Michael has been into this dog fighting for so long that ... he not only knew about, he is behind all of it, he's paying for all of it. ... Apparently, he's into it big time," Landry said.

An investigation of illegal dog fighting at property Vick owned, and has since sold, in Virginia is ongoing. Police were at the property in a drug investigation involving Vick's cousin when nearly 70 dogs, mostly pit bulls, were discovered. No charges have been filed in the case.

Buchanan played for the Falcons with Vick for three seasons from 2001-03.

TANK JOHNSON UPDATE

A beaming Terry "Tank" Johnson emerged from the gloomy confines of Cook County Jail on Sunday morning to the sound of chirping birds and the sun on his face.

The Chicago Bears lineman wore a baggy white T-shirt, a red New York Yankees baseball cap and a silver chain with a gargantuan "T.J. 99" pendant that sparkled in the sunlight. Johnson's Bears jersey number is 99.

Johnson refused to answer questions, including what it was like to spend 23 hours of every day locked up in his cell. His only words: "Happy Mother's Day." Then he was driven away in a black Range Rover.
Johnson, 25, apparently won't be returning to his old Gurnee home. Movers were there carting out his belongings in the last week or so, according to some of his former neighbors.

He served half of his 120-day sentence -- standard procedure for inmates who don't misbehave -- for violating the terms of his probation on a 2005 weapons conviction.

PATS MINI-CAMP UPDATE

Boston College's Larry Anam, who signed as an undrafted free agent, worked at cornerback . . . Matt Gutierrez, an undrafted free agent out of Idaho State, was the lone quarterback in camp . . . Wide receivers Chris Dunlap (Georgia Tech), Chris Baker (Rutgers), safety Denny Poland (Air Force), and running back Chris Vincent (Oregon) were in camp on a tryout basis . . . Running back Quinton Smith, an undrafted free agent from Rice, was not present because he was in Rice's graduation ceremonies . . . Linebacker Justin Warren, an undrafted free agent from Texas A&M, spent the majority of practice on exercise equipment . . . Forty-two media members covered the minicamp.

WALTER THOMAS UPDATE

Heralded 375-pound New Orleans undrafted free agent DT Walter Thomas lasted barely 10 minutes at the Saints' rookie camp this weekend. Thomas was reportedly carried off the field by training staff and his locker has reportedly been cleaned out. Thomas was literally the ‘biggest’ undrafted free agent signee after the 2007 draft. Thomas’ college career consisted of two junior college games as flunked out of Oklahoma State before ever playing in a game, while trouble with the law cut short his stint at Northwest Mississippi Community College.

POST DRAFT RECAP: FANTASY EDITION

Rick Serritella, NFL Draft Bible

AFC EAST
BUFFALO BILLS: The most valuable fantasy rookie this season could very well be running back Marshawn Lynch, whom the Bills selected with the twelfth overall pick to replace Willis McGahee as their feature back. Quarterback Trent Edwards may be worth a late-round pick in dynasty leagues. Fourth-round pick Dwayne Wright is still recovering from a knee injury and fullback Derek Schouman will have to battle Brad Cieslak and Ryan Neufeld for a roster spot. On defense, second-round pick Paul Posluszny was drafted to replace the departed London Fletcher-Baker.

MAIMI DOLPHINS: The more productive fantasy talent may be third-round pick Lorenzo Booker, not Miami’s first round draft pick, Ted Ginn. With the recent news of Ricky Williams failing yet another drug test, Booker looks to be the secondary option in the Dolphins backfield behind Ronnie Brown. Ginn will be more of a factor on special teams returning kicks and is still very raw as a wide receiver. The sleeper is John Beck. Whether the team trades for Trent Green or keeps Daunte Culpepper, Beck is considered to be the quarterback of the future. He is a solid dynasty league option.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: While the Patriots primarily focused on defense and offensive line during this year’s draft, they did snag a candidate to be the 2007 version of Marques Colston. Sixth-round selection Justise Hairston has a legitimate chance to come in and compete for the starting job with Laurence Maroney recovering from off-season shoulder surgery. The selections of Clint Oldenburg, Corey Hilliard and Mike Elgin will add some depth to the offensive line. The Patriots also added five players on defense, including safety Brandon Meriweather.

NEW YORK JETS: The Jets took a roll of the dice in round seven with Clemson wide receiver Chansi Stuckey. Stuckey was once considered a first round talent, but a foot injury caused his draft stock to drop. The team is trying to figure out what to do with Justin McCareins, who has been a huge bust. After the starting pair of Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery, the team’s wide receiver position is wide open. The selections of cornerback Darrelle Revis and linebacker David Harris should be a tremendous boost to the defense.

TOP FANTASY ROOKIES: WIDE RECEIVERS (1-5)

Rick Serritella, NFL Draft Bible

1. CALVIN JOHNSON (DET): Is fourth time the charm? Matt Millen certainly hopes so. Johnson is so special that he is expected to be the number one wide out, despite the presence of veteran Roy Williams. The Lions have a quarterback in Jon Kitna who can air it out, which could translate into not just a standout rookie performance, but Johnson being a top fantasy player at the wide out position during his rookie campaign.

2. DWAYNE BOWE (KC): Eddie Kennison isn’t a true number one receiver, but he’s been forced to play that role as the Chiefs lack a go-to guy on offense in passing situations. Bowe has the potential to be that guy, but will probably play second fiddle for at least his first season. With the team shipping out Dante Hall, the need for Bowe to produce right away will be greater than most rookie wide outs in this class.

3. DWAYNE JARRETT (CAR): Out with the old and in with the new. The Panther traded in one former USC wide out (Keyshawn Johnson), for another in Jarrett. With the release of Johnson, the Panthers obviously feel confident enough Jarrett can start immediately. While he will serve more as a possession wide out, you should expect Jarrett to get his fair share of opportunities with so many teams focusing on shutting down Steve Smith. The double-teams could create one-on-one situations for Jarrett and allow him to put up some points.

4. ROBERT MEACHEM (NO): The New Orleans faithful was upset over the release of Joe Horn during the off-season, but the selection of Meachem will help them to soon forget. The emergence of Marques Colston and Devery Henderson last season will allow a smooth transition for Meachem and maintain plenty of targets for Saints signal-caller Drew Brees to throw to.

5. ANTHONY GONZALEZ (IND): The perfect fit for the Colts offense, Gonzalez will slide right into the slot role vacated by Brandon Stokley. When Stokley was healthy, the Colts offense was scoring touchdowns at a record pace. With Gonzalez in the slot, Peyton Manning could make another run at the single-season touchdown record.

TOP FANTASY ROOKIES: WIDE RECEIVERS (6-10)

Rick Serritella, NFL Draft Bible

6. CRAIG DAVIS (SD): A bit of a surprising pick considering Davis was not projected to be selected in the first round. He enters a great situation in San Diego, which boosts his fantasy value. The team is not expected to bring back Keenan McCardell. The two current starters, Erik Parker and Vincent Jackson are far from spectacular. There’s a chance Davis could beat out Jackson as the number two wide out and be considered as a viable fantasy backup.

7. STEVE SMITH (NYG): The Giants felt the need to draft another wide receiver with Amani Toomer coming off an ACL injury and Sinorice Moss not proving much of anything his rookie season. Should Toomer suffer any setbacks from recovery, Smith could find himself in the starting line up. Keep an eye on how Smith performs during training camp, as he might be a player that you draft in the late rounds as a possible sleeper.

8. TED GINN JR. (MIA): While Ginn is a tremendous return man, his impact will be felt primarily on special teams. His receiving skills remain raw, but he is expected to compete with Az-Zahir Hakim for the slot role. As far as fantasy value goes, Ginn brings more to the Miami defense/special teams than he does as a wide receiver.

9. JACOBY JONES (HOU): One to watch, Jones is certainly capable of being this year’s small-school talent who delivers in a big way. The Texans have sorely lacked a secondary receiver to pair with Andre Johnson. Houston brought in Eric Moulds last season, but the move was more of a stop-gap solution, as they elected not to bring him back for another year. They will be banking on Jones to emerge as a playmaker for them on offense.

10. AUNDRAE ALLISON (MIN): Surprisingly, Minnesota’s first round pick Sidney Rice doesn’t crack our top ten list, but Allison, the sixth-rounder out of East Carolina does. An explosive player who can take it to the house any time he touches the ball, whether it’s on a deep ball, or turning a screen pass into a 60-yard touchdown. Allison is more polished than Rice, therefore will get the first opportunity. Once in, he may be too good to take out.

TOP FANTASY ROOKIES: TIGHT ENDS

Rick Serritella, NFL Draft Bible

1. GREG OLSEN (CHI): By adding Olsen, the Bears can have an underneath presence to compliment Mushin Muhammad. The status of last year’s starter Desmond Clark, who had a career year last season, is uncertain. If they ship Clark out, it opens the door for Olsen to make an immediate impact. Should they retain Clark, you may have to wait until next season for Olsen’s arrival as a solid fantasy option.

2. ZACH MILLER (OAK): The selection of Miller makes a lot of sense for the Raiders, who haven’t had a legitimate receiving threat at the position since Rickey Dudley. An excellent pass catcher at Arizona State, Miller hails from the same alma mater as Todd Heap. Playing in a vertical passing attack such as Oakland’s, the dump pass to Miller could become a safety valve for the quarterback.

3. BEN PATRICK (ARZ): Considered the best receiving threat in this tight end class behind Olsen and Miller, the Cardinals were shocked that Patrick lasted all the way until the seventh round. While the team had high expectations for Leonard Pope, the pass-catching ability of Patrick adds another dimension to the offense for quarterback Matt Leinart.

4. CLARK HARRIS (GB): One of the more under heralded players to come out of the draft, Clark has a solid pair of hands, something quarterback Brett Favre loves. With Bubba Franks starting to show some signs of wear and tear last season, look for Harris to be worked into the rotation and emerge as a possible Red Zone target for the Packers.

5. DANTE ROSARIO (CAR): A versatile player who can line up at tight end, fullback or the slot, the Panthers can utilize Rosario in an array of ways. Carolina has no real receiving threat at tight end, so look for Rosario to get some opportunities down around the goal line.

KENDALL ABSENT

Jets Coach Eric Mangini said the veteran offensive lineman Pete Kendall, one of the team captains last year, had stopped attending the team’s voluntary workouts. Mangini sidestepped the question of whether Kendall’s absence would adversely affect his standing on the team, saying, “It’s positive to be here.” Mangini added, “It’s a voluntary program, but I think it is something that has real value.”

FAVRE PEEVED

TUNICA --
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre built his NFL reputation around hard work, dedication and being the ultimate teammate.
After 16 years, and within months of a 17th season of pro football, the former Southern Miss standout showed his dedication to the Packers organization recently when he did his best to help land wide receiver Randy Moss from Oakland.

But instead of wearing gold and green next season, Moss will catch passes from Tom Brady in a deal to the New England Patriots that went through during the second day of the NFL Draft.

Speaking at his annual celebrity golf tournament in Tunica, the three-time MVP of the NFL let his frustration be known.

"It is disappointing," Favre said. "It was a done deal and the stories of how we lost him because he didn't want to restructure his contract were not true.

"He was going to wipe his contract clean and sign for $3 million guaranteed, plus a fourth-round draft pick. That would have been a steal. But we were not willing to guarantee part of that $3 million. I even had (agent) Bus (Cook) call up there and tell them I would give up part of my salary to guarantee that part of the money. Apparently that wasn't enough either."

Favre doesn't want to come across as a bad guy of the group and he remains dedicated to Green Bay. However, he said to get a good player, you must pay a good player.

And good players win football games.

"I just want to win; maybe I see things the wrong way," he said. "I don't want to ruffle any feathers and I want people to respect me. Sometimes I think it's hard for them to let Brett go. They might think that we pay him a lot of money, but he still gives us the best chance to win. I've never been told that, but there are times when I wonder if I'm the odd man out here and they just don't know how to tell me.

"This is a first-class organization that wants to win. I want to win now."

BOWE STRUGGLES

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- If Dwayne Bowe wanted to make a good first impression, he failed miserably.

Kansas City's first-round draft pick began his professional career by showing up 30 minutes late for his first practice. Stretching exercises and coach Herm Edwards' welcoming remarks were finished by the time the wide receiver from LSU hurried onto the field for the opening session of a three-day rookie minicamp.

Then the 6-foot-3 Bowe, who described himself on draft day as "intimidating," proceeded to drop several passes.

He also caught quite a few, and looked good doing it. But he did admit that for this one afternoon at least, he did not feel quite so intimidating.

"Today I felt kind of in-between, going against new guys, new quarterback," he said, "Not knowing the timing. But it's all football. You've got to go out there and compete."

He said he was late because he "had some things to do."

"Just a minor thing," he said.

His tardiness was not lost on a new boss who puts a premium on punctuality.

"I don't know. I think he had a shoe problem," Edwards said.

"That's what those big guys have. You know, when they get those big contracts they don't know what shoes to wear, I guess. I don't know. But he was here. He started practicing. He was in the drills. He dropped some balls and I told him relax.

PATS TOP PICK A TEAM PLAYER

New England Patriots first round pick, DB Brandon Meriweather, sounded like a veteran Patriot when asked where he would play in the secondary, "Right now, I see myself as a defensive back," said Meriweather. "I try not to label myself as a corner or as a safety or as anything. Right now, I just want to learn the playbook and get to know my coaches and contribute to the team in whichever way I can."

KEYSHAWN UPDATE

WR Keyshawn Johnson isn't in a rush to make a decision about where he will play next season after being released by the Carolina Panthers. "I'm relaxing in 88-degree weather in Southern California," Johnson said Friday. "I'm just chilling. There's no sense of urgency on this end." There are plenty of teams that figure to want Johnson, including the Raiders and Titans.

FAVRE UPDATE

Brett Favre's ankle isn't strong enough for him to take part in the Packers' mini-camp next week, and it's unclear whether he'll attend it.When Favre and HC Mike McCarthy set the QB's off-season schedule, it was before he'd decided to have surgery Feb. 26 to remove bone spurs from his ankle. McCarthy said he's expecting Favre to attend the mandatory camp, but a source close to Favre told the Press-Gazette that Favre isn't planning on coming because he can't practice and would rather work at home with a personal trainer to rehabilitate his ankle and get into top shape.

EAGLES WR WOES

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Bethel Johnson will not practice in this weekends minicamp due to a stress fracture in his tibia. "We'll just see how he does here in the next few weeks," said HC Andy Reid.

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Reggie Brown suffered a leg contusion during Saturday mornings practice. HC Andy Reid said, "He is a little bit sore right now," while addressing the media after practice.

WILLIAMS CLAIMS TO BE CLEAN

Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, in a statement issued by his agent Leigh Steinberg to the Associated Press, said late Friday night that he is "clean" and is preparing for a "triumphant return to the NFL." Williams implied the decision to delay his possible reinstatement was as a result of his consultation with a league-appointed psychiatrist.

JACOBS TO CHANGE STYLE

New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs says he is ready to change his style of running from being a bruising power back to an elusive every down back. "Me being the guy, things will have to change. I can't play 16 games and play the same way I have been playing, but I can easily go back to making people miss. They needed help on short yardage and goal line, and I fixed that. Now I have to look to another part of my game, running around people and making them miss. I know how to make people miss."

SWANN ATTEMPTS COMEBACK

Darren Urban, of the East Valley Tribune, reports former NFL DT Eric Swann (Panthers) is attempting to comeback. He said he has yet to be cleared by doctors after multiple knee surgeries, but he has been training since January.

TO BACK EARLY

According to the Dallas Morning News, Cowboys WR Terrell Owens was catching passes at Dallas minicamp Saturday. Owens was not expected to start catching passes until July, but the WR is obviously ahead of schedule from his two off-season finger surgeries.

BLANK WORRIED ABOUT SUSPENSION

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, concerned that quarterback Michael Vick could be suspended by the NFL, has had another meeting with his embattled star where "I could not have been more stern." Blank spoke to Vick in person about a series of recent off-the-field incidents, most recently an ongoing investigation of illegal dog fighting at a property he owns in Virginia. Blank said he did not know if Vick has any involvement but, "from the facts we have so far, it's not a pretty picture. It's clearly an issue and we'll wait and see what revolves around it. I'm not a prosecutor or an attorney so I'm not going to sit in judgment of Michael."

Blank has been criticized for being too close to Vick. Blank did not deny the relationship with Vick, but said it has allowed him to be firm with Vick when needed. "If it sounds like I'm talking stern, like to a child of mine, I am," Blank said. "He needs to take some personal responsibility." Blank said he also reminded Vick that he could lose his lucrative endorsement deals if he continues to garner negative publicity. Vick has several endorsement deals, the biggest with Nike and AirTran. "I told him that if, 'You think [Nike chairman] Phil Knight is going to have the image of his company tarnished you're wrong. They have a lot of athletes that represent them and represent them well. Michael, I'm telling you they're not going to sit by, just like the NFL won't sit by.' He told me he is aware of that."

COLBERT FIGHTING FOR SPOT

Pat Yasinskas, writing for the Sporting News, reports Carolina Panthers WR Keary Colbert will have to fight to make the roster in training camp.

FALCONS MINI-CAMP UPDATE

Defensive tackle Grady Jackson, who had his left knee operated on this offseason, is not expected to take the field during the five-practice minicamp.

"Grady is here for mandatory minicamp," Falcons coach Bobby Petrino said Friday. "He's in all of the meetings. He's not able to go out and participate and work yet. He's in rehab with the trainer."

Petrino said rookies Jamaal Anderson, Chris Houston and Justin Blalock caught his eye during their first practices.

"Jamaal certainly catches your eye by his size and all of that," Petrino said of the Falcons' first-round pick. "He's not quite in the shape he needs to be. He'll see that. I think he cramped up right there at the end.

"Chris Houston did a real nice job in the secondary, with his speed and quickness. Adding him and David Irons to the corner spot improved us athletically right there.

Tight end Martrez Milner had a tough first day.

"The first practice was very overwhelming, but the main thing is keep running and showing effort," Milner said.

The former Georgia tight end, also caught Petrino's attention.

"I'm very excited about his size and his ability to not only run-block at the line of scrimmage, but he's able to get down the field," Petrino said. "We're going to concentrate a lot on him catching the ball, looking it all the way in and tucking it away."

KOLB READY TO MEET MCNABB "MAN ON MAN"

By LES BOWEN
bowenl@phillynews.com

KEVIN KOLB, probably the most scrutinized 36th overall selection in the history of the National Football League, arrived in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon for his first Eagles minicamp, which began with an evening meeting and will continue on the field today through Monday.
When he met with reporters just before the meeting, Kolb acknowledged he still had not met Donovan McNabb, the franchise quarterback whose tenure he might end up curtailing.

Asked whether he was eager to introduce himself to McNabb, Kolb replied: "Yeah, I am. Obviously, there's been a lot of stuff floatin' around, you know. Just ready to, man-on-man, get to meet him, see his face, get to talk to one another, get to know one another and build a relationship."

What did he anticipate they'd talk about?

"Football," Kolb said. "That's what we're here for."

COWBOYS ARTICLE

Tom Orsborn
Express-News Staff Writer

I believe former Buffalo Bills linebacker John Holecek when he says Terrell Owens will get along well with Wade Phillips.

I’m just not so sure the same can be said for Owens and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

In a phone interview this week, Holecek told me he doesn’t expect Owens to be a problem for the low-key Phillips, who replaced the retired Bill Parcells in February as the Cowboys coach.

“When Wade was (head coach) in Buffalo (from 1998-2000), he had to deal with Bruce Smith, Cornelius Bennett, Thurman Thomas and Jim Kelly,” Holecek said. “That’s not to say they were bad guys, but there were a lot of big egos.

“When you have a guy like (Owens) who needs to be dealt with kid gloves, Wade is the soft-spoken leader you want. If (Owens) can’t get along with Wade, he’s not going to be successful anywhere.”

But just how involved is Phillips, a defensive guru hired in part to revamp the team’s 3-4 defense, going to be with the offense? Owens clashed more last season with receivers coach/passing game coordinator Todd Haley, which is a big reason why Haley now works for the Arizona Cardinals.

If Owens is playing poorly, he’ll need a scapegoat. The likely candidate will be Garrett, who is nearly 20 years younger than Phillips.

If Owens doesn’t think he’s getting the ball enough, he’ll need somebody to lash out at. The likely candidate will be Garrett, who is making his debut as an offensive coordinator.

MEDIA SWARM TO ATL

By STEVE WYCHE
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 05/12/07

Flowery Branch — Falcons quarterback Michael Vick spoke Friday, but when it came to addressing the investigation of illegal dog fighting at a property he owns in Virginia, he refused to say anything.

"As of right now my situation is still under investigation, and my attorney's advised me not to talk about this situation right now," Vick said in an opening statement.

He repeated some version of that statement three times — once when asked if he would like to proclaim his innocence — to the eight questions that were asked before a member of the Falcons communications staff ended the 3-minute, 15-second interview session.

If Vick failed to fully understand the scope of attention this situation has drawn, it was brought into full focus on the first day of the team's three-day minicamp. Approximately 66 members of the national and local media — more than six times the normal contingent — besieged the complex trying to get answers from one of the NFL's most recognizable figures about his latest brush with off-field controversy.

Vick is embroiled in controversy because police found nearly 70 dogs, mostly pit bulls, housed behind a house Vick owned in Surry County, Va., just more than two weeks ago. Some of the dogs needed medical attention. Police also found contraband used for dog fighting, which is a felony in Virginia.

No charges have been filed.

Vick could also face discipline from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who has suspended two players for next season. Vick met with Goodell in New York April 28 before the draft to discuss his off-field issues.

CAMPBELL WORKING OT

Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell has been putting in a lot of time at Redskin Park this off-season, both in the classroom and on the field. Both head coach Joe Gibbs and associate head coach/offensive coordinator Al Saunders have seen big dividends so far. Said Saunders, "He's making progress. He's a wonderful kid to work with. He's extremely bright and has worked extremely hard on his techniques and fundamentals [with] a lot of film work, a lot of board work and a lot of understanding of what we are doing from a schematic standpoint."

PAC MAN CITED FOR SPEEDING; SUSPENDED LICENSE

The Associated Press reports Tennessee Titans CB Adam Jones received a ticket for speeding in Nashville Monday, May 7. Jones was also cited for not having his driver's license with him while driving.

MCNAIR NOT BEHIND THE WHEEL IN DUI CHARGE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was charged with driving under the influence Thursday even though police said his brother-in-law was behind the wheel of the pickup registered to the former Tennessee Titan.

Although McNair was just a passenger, he was charged with a misdemeanor under a Tennessee law that prohibits a vehicle owner from letting it be driven by someone who is inebriated.

Police said officer Harold Taylor pulled over McNair's 2003 Dodge pickup just before midnight Wednesday because it was speeding. The driver, 31-year-old Jamie Cartwright, smelled of alcohol, failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath alcohol test, police spokesman Don Aaron said.

Cartwright said he was McNair's brother-in-law and acknowledged drinking at least two beers, police said.

The law used to charge McNair doesn't consider whether the vehicle owner was drinking, but only if the driver was impaired. Aaron said Nashville police have used the law to cite 42 other people this year.

SHOCKEY TO REPORT

Jeremy Shockey reportedly sent a text message to Eli Manning saying he'll be at Giants Stadium next week to participate in passing drills.

PAC MAN SAGA CONTINUES...

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, reports Tennessee Titans CB Adam Jones missed one of his league-mandated counseling sessions.

GIANT CONCERNS OVER JACOBS

Vinny DiTrani, of the Bergen Record, reports New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is a little concerned about how RB Brandon Jacobs will hold up since he will be the team's starting running back. "That's the thing that I'm worried about: Does he have the stamina to stay in there for a whole game and carry the ball 20-25 times over 16-17 weeks? But I'm kind of excited at what he's going to do," Gilbride said. Jacobs does not believe Gilbride should be worried because Jacobs knows he will have to change some things this season.

VICK SELLS HOUSE OF ALLEGED HOME TO DOG-FIGHTING

Michael Vick's property at the center of dogfighting allegations has been sold, according to a report in a Virginia newspaper.

The Daily Press of Newport News reported that John Brooks, an agent with Long & Foster, said the two-story brick home was put up for sale on Wednesday and sold the same day.

Vick was asking $350,000 for the property, less than half of its assessed value of $747,000. Brooks would not reveal the sale price.

The property was searched by Virginia and local police last month. Police were initially at the property in a drug investigation involving Vick's cousin when contraband related to dogfighting was found.

ATL CUTS WEBSTER

The Falcons terminated the contract of veteran CB Jason Webster on Thursday.

Webster (5-9, 187 pounds) played in eight games with seven starts in 2006 for Atlanta. He posted 47 total tackles (38 solo) with two interceptions, one forced fumble and five passes defensed. He was inactive for seven consecutive games before he was placed on Reserve/Injured on Dec. 30.

In three seasons after signing with the Falcons as an unrestricted free agent in 2004 from San Francisco, Webster had 178 tackles in 33 games (29 starts).

The Texas A&M product has played in 86 games with 73 starts in his career.

FANECA ASKS FOR TRADE

Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports Pittsburgh Steelers OG Alan Faneca has asked the team to trade him. "I've been asking since February, to trade me, to let me go. I've done my piece, I've done my time, I've done everything I can for this organization," Faneca said. The Steelers have offered him a contract, but he said it is more of a "non-offer."

HAYIM: RICKY & PAC MAN BELONG TOGETHER

Gregg Hayim, NFL Draft Bible

First things first, you have to respect the gamesmanship Commissioner Roger Goodell displayed in regards to this latest chapter of the Pac-Man saga. It turns out that by the time the pair sat down for their face-to-face off the field conduct meeting in early April, the Commissioner was well aware of Jones’s late-night visit to a New York Gentleman’s club just a few hours earlier. The clubs staff notified NFL security of Pac-Man’s visit and it wasn’t long before word got back to the Commissioner’s office.

Yet instead of accusing the oft-troubled Titan, Goodell set a series of traps. Strategically he positioned his pawns with a series of questions asking Pac-Man how he planned on altering his lifestyle. The changes he would make, the company he would keep and so forth. Jones went through his surely rehearsed choir boy act just as the Commissioner was positioning his rook. Did the plan include a self-imposed ban of strip-clubs? Goodell quizzed. Jones replied yes- as a matter of fact it did.

The savvy Commissioner then introduced his queen, asking when exactly the last time he visited a strip club was. Jones reportedly sensed the trap, fidgeted around for a bit and replied with “a day ago”. A week later the Commissioner handed down the one year suspension….Check-Mate.

Why Pac-Man couldn’t have stuck around his hotel room and ponied up the $9.99 for a Spank-tra-vision double feature-just like the rest of us- is beyond me. What I do know is that if he had, he may have saved himself a boat load of cash and one very awkward breakfast with the Commissioner.

So much for honesty being the best policy.

And then there is Ricky. Oh Ricky Ricky Ricky, not again!

Chris Mortensen is reporting that Miami Dolphins Running Back Ricky Williams has tested positive, yet again, for marijuana. Williams, a league substance abuse policy Hall of Famer, was to be eligible for reinstatement this month. However, in lieu of the positive test, the date for his possible return has been pushed back to September.

A medical advisor close to the situation was stated as saying that “he's[Williams] been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder -- that's a real disease and a good percentage of those folks self-medicate with substances like marijuana, often at the moment they are about to have a high level of social interaction." Interesting point Doc, but how many of those folks are paid millions of dollars to play a game that strictly forbids them from doing so? Better yet, how many of those people lose out on millions from their inability to refrain from passing around the peace pipe?

I’m sure this expert is far more knowledgeable than I when it comes to social anxiety disorder, but I am relatively certain that there are prescription meds out there to address this sort of thing. If Doctor Doolittle wanted to be of real service to Ricky he would advise his client to toss out the bong and then write him a prescription for Prozac. Problem solved.

BREAKING NEWS: WILLIAMS TESTS POSITIVE FOR MARIJUANA

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN.com, reports Miami Dolphins RB Ricky Williams tested positive for marijuana in April and will not be allowed to apply for reinstatement to the National Football League until September, according to sources. The league's medical advisers that oversee Williams' rehabilitation program recently notified commissioner Roger Goodell of the positive test and made the recommendation that Williams not be allowed to apply for reinstatement until September, sources added.

DAVID GIVENS INJURY UPDATE

Teresa M. Walker, of The Associated Press, reports Tennessee Titans WR David Givens (knee) says his recovery from a serious knee injury last season is going much slower than expected. Although no longer walking with the aid of a cane, Givens says he is unsure when he will be able to return to the field. "I don't know exactly when," Givens said. "It's kind of a week-to-week thing right now. When I can start doing some pounding on it, I'll know. I'll have a better idea at the time."

PATS LEAVE DOOR OPEN FOR SEAU

If the New England Patriots are looking to add to their linebacker corps, veteran Junior Seau remains a possibility.
Seau's locker remains intact at Gillette Stadium, a sign that Seau has not been forgotten. At the same time, the Patriots kept the locker of veteran Roman Phifer intact a few years ago and Phifer, then a free agent, never returned.
Seau, who remains a free agent, has been recovering from a broken arm sustained last November.

COWBOY'S GUARD COULD BE CUT

QB NEWS & NOTES

*How much did Brady Quinn's first-round nose dive cost him? Well, based on contract figures for the No. 3 and 22 picks in '06, he lost about $20 million guaranteed money by slipping those 19 spots.

*Eagles draft pick Kevin Kolb made an interesting choice when it came time to selecting an agent. He's represented by Jeff Nalley, of Select Sports Group in Houston. If the name doesn't ring a bell, Nalley was the agent who took former Penn State running back Curtis Enis on a $1,100 shopping spree in 1997 when he still was playing for the Nittany Lions. Enis, then a junior, was booted off the team by coach Joe Paterno and later entered the draft, where he was taken in the first round by the Bears. Nalley was suspended by the players association for 2 years for the infraction and fined $15,000.

*Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio, who isn't one of quarterback Byron Leftwich's biggest boosters, wanted to take Brady Quinn with the team's first-round draft pick, according to a source. But vice president of player personnel James Harris, who makes the final call on personnel decisions, decided to take safety Reggie Nelson instead. Leftwich has missed 15 of the last 21 regular-season games with injuries and is entering the last year of his contract.

VICK PUTS HOUSE FOR SALE

UPDATE: Michael Vick has put his Surry County house up for sale.

This follows an investigation into Vick's property that revealed evidence of dog fighting. Sources have said that a sign went up in front of Vick's house that said "For Sale By Owner."

Sources also claimed that Vick has priced the property to sell quickly.

According to Sports Illustrated Online reporter Don Banks, Vick did know about the dogs. Banks has interviewed people very close to Vick.

"I had two sources tell me strongly, there is no doubt Michael Vick knows what's going on in the house," Banks said, "and that he really has an interest in pit bulls and dog fighting that goes back quite a ways."
