NFL Draft Bible correspondent Bo Marchionte 'on location' with newly inducted John Randle at the NFL Hall of Fame:
Known for his face paint and crazy persona during his playing days, John Randle laughed when asked when the Hall of Fame became a reality for him. Randle said, “When I heard my wife screaming in the other room.” Now the former undrafted kid from Texas prepares to stand in front of the finest football players to ever play on the gridiron and pull the blanket off his bust.
As an undrafted player, Randle didn’t enjoy the simple ease of signing that lucrative contract; he had to battle for recognition and let his game mature while he found his way. Playing at tiny Texas A&I, the NFL’s best evaluators missed on Randle. Their miscue showed up quickly as Randle got to the quarterback 9.5 times in just his second season.
However, it wasn’t until his third season that Randle felt comfortable. He felt he belonged in the NFL after his coaches, “Told me they had traded some guys and that I was going to be the starting defensive tackle. That’s when I knew I had my chance to show what I could do in the National Football League.”
He certainly took advantage of the opportunity. Randle’s third season marked the first of eight with double-digit sack totals. To put that into perspective, it would mean former first-round pick Mario Williams would have to register double-digit sacks from this season to 2018. Good luck with that!
The fierce and fun Randle said, “I just looked at football as a game I loved to play,” referring to the game as “recess”. The Minnesota Viking enters the Hall one year after his teammate Randle McDaniel. Randle described his former teammate as “unbelievable” and agreed that both he and McDaniel being named into the Hall showed that, “Even though we didn’t win any championships, it showed the caliber of players we had in Minnesota.”
Anyone who watched Randle play knows he brought excitement to the game and was as entertaining and crazy as any guy that played during his era. When asked who matched him in the craziness department, Randle wiped his hand over his face and pondered the question before answering, “Wilder than me? Oh, my God. That’s a good question…probably the guys on the Packers. Frank Winters and those guys, they were all like just some weird guys.”
Randle knows he didn’t travel the normal NFL road, “I wasn’t a top draft pick or 6’5” from a powerhouse school. That wasn’t my background,” said the Viking immortal, “I just put the face paint on and screamed and hollered.”
Is was more than just face paint and hollering that made Randle stand out; it was his relentless pursuit of the quarterback and let’s face it, the fact that he made NFL Films that much more fun to watch didn’t hurt his case.
Emmitt Smith was taken 17th overall in 1990. John Randle went undrafted in 1990. On Saturday they will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame together, proving yet again that it’s not where you come from but where you finish that matters most.

Randle had a great career for someone that wasn't drafted. Gives hope to all the kids that didn't perform great at the combine.
